Our Process | Retail Ceiling Inspections

Here’s what you can expect from a retail ceiling inspection conducted by our team:

We will go into the ceiling cavity to conduct a thorough and independent audit.

We take photos of any issues which are identified clearly showing the remediation teams what is required to correct identified issues. 

We provide a comprehensive and accurate list of safety hazards, non-compliant issues that require action, what remediation work needs to be carried out and in what order we recommend these occur. 

During every ceiling inspection and site audit, Benchmark will:

  • Check the grid system, if it’s connected to the wall properly and if its compliant
  • Check whether the ceiling has been suspended correctly to code
  • Check the spacing of the rods which are attached to the grid system and that they’re at correct intervals of 1200mm along with how the suspension rod is secured to the purlin and if the securing clip is compliant.
  • Check if work completed by visiting trades people has been completed to industry standard, and if they’ve removed all debris after repairs, the failure to remove debris is very common, it is hidden, who will know?

Warning Signs for Retail Ceiling Issues

It’s highly unlikely that the average person – whether they are staff member or customer – is going to know if there’s a potential hazard in the ceiling cavity above them, as it’s out of public view and without experience knowing what signs to look out for.  

It’s one of the reasons why we take so many pictures when conducting an audit in the ceiling cavity and provide photographic evidence to our clients in our comprehensive written reports. 

For example, a ceiling may be failing for any number of reasons including:  

  • Plasterboard ceiling is sagging
  • A loud creaking or cracking noise is heard coming from the ceiling or structure 
  • The plasterboard sheeting may be pulling away from the grid if there are blisters (nail pops) or cracks visible  
  • Grid is not level or sagging 
  • Security cameras/ monitors and alike are not level 
  • Grid is separating 
  • Mould on ceiling grid tiles or similar water damage signs 
  • Cracks in walls, floors and general movement 
  • Wall perimeter not properly secured 
  • Signage (under grid) not properly secured
